I turned my life around and now I’m starting my own business

Nicola Mably, a 36 year old single mother from Bridgend is starting up her own handywoman business to help other women with electrical tasks around the home, after undertaking a Level 3 apprenticeship in electrical installation.

In the past, Nicola’s home life was difficult, but she has been able to turn her life around and undertake a series of courses that have put her on the pathway to finding her vocation as an electrician and even setting up her own business.

Nicola said “I feel like, for the first time in my life, I’m taking control and am excited about what the future might hold, rather than fearing it.

“I became passionate about electrics almost ten years ago after managing to fit a new cooker in my home while taking directions over the phone from my dad.

“I was thrilled that I had managed to fix something all by myself and felt really motivated to use that skill and put it to good use.

“I was so excited that I went straight down to the college the following day and started looking at courses I might be able to do.

“The people at the college were really friendly and helpful and talked me through all the options available to me.

“I initially signed up to do a one year introductory course in electrical installation at Bridgend College before undertaking a four year, part-time Level 3 apprenticeship in electrical engineering and installation.

“Since completing my apprenticeship, I have acquired a whole host of new skills and qualifications that have helped me to secure a number of different jobs including most recently working for a renewable energy company called Green Heart Energy.

“I absolutely loved that job but now that project has come to an end I’m looking at using all the skills and qualifications I have learned by setting up my own handywoman business. I’m setting it up with my youngest son, Liam, who is currently taking an electrical engineering course at Bridgend College.”

“We will start by working evenings and weekends while we build up the business and then hopefully, we will be able to go full-time. It’s a really exciting time and I can’t wait to get started.”

“You are never too old to learn, and I would urge anyone else so has a burning passion for a hobby or even wants to learn a new skill to give it a go because you never know where it will take you.”

Nicola took control of her life by gaining the qualifications she needed to start her own business.
