I know my contract is coming to an end – how should I handle it?

  • If you have been happy at the company then make it clear to the employer that you would be happy to return. Make sure that you leave your up to date contact details.
  • Network!  Speak to anyone that you feel might be able to help you in the future. Get their contact details.
  • Ask your line manager or supervisor if they would be prepared to give you a reference.
  • Record everything you have done and achieved. If you have done any training courses collect any records or certificates.

I am really unhappy – should I simply walk out?

  • If the situation is unbearable it will be hard to stick it out. But try to avoid this at all costs.
  • You may be in breach of your contract of you do not work out your notice period. Your eligibility to benefits can also be affected.

How should I tell my employer that I want to leave?

  • First be sure it is what you really want to do. Check the notice period you need to give.
  • Face to face is best – but you are likely to be asked to put the request in writing. It will not be a comfortable situation. 
  • Be prepared to tell your boss why you want to leave
  • Do not burn any bridges. Even if you have been unhappy in your job try to avoid slagging off the company or your fellow workers. You will need references in the future.
