How to choose a subject/course

Choosing subjects in year 9? Looking at university courses? Thinking about learning to support your career or for pleasure?

We have some tips and information to help you make successful choices.

  • Check it out.  Always find out as much as possible about the course or subject itself. Even if you have studied the topic before do not assume that you know everything about it.  Your sources of information include:
    • The internet allows you quick access to information. It can also allow you to ask questions of past students and experts via email, blog, web chat etc.
    • Other students are very valuable source of information particularly if you are making choices  in school or college.
    • Tutors and teachers are usually course experts. Take advantage of open days/evenings.
  • Career choice. If you have a career in mind check out the entry qualifications. We have information on hundreds of jobs on our site.
  • Finance. Learning is not always free but there can be support and funding available. Check out our finance section.
  • Entry requirements. Check course details to find out what entry qualifications you need to enter the course. If you are unsure if your qualifications will be acceptable – contact the course tutor.
  • Enjoy it. Can you live with the subject or course area for one or two years (or longer for some courses)? Find out enough about the subject or course to help you decide if you will enjoy your studies.
  • Support. Talk to family and friends about your choices. This is particularly important if you are in full time education or intend to return to full time learning.
