Results Week Careers Fair helps Abigail get her first job at Hugh James

Abigail King secured a fantastic job with Hugh James with help from Careers Wales this month.

Abigail attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and had recently completed her AS exams.  She enjoyed school but had decided not to go to university and wanted to find employment.

Abigail (pictured on the left with Jessica George from Hugh James) visited Careers Wales in Cardiff and spoke to a Careers Adviser, Lavern Forbes, about her interests and options. She was shown how to use the Careers Wales website and was told about the Results Week Careers Fair being held in our office the following week.

Abigail said: “The interview helped me a lot. It gave me ideas of what I wanted to do and the website was really useful.”Abigail found the jobs at Hugh James really interesting. She spoke with the company’s HR Advisor, Jessica George, and gave her a copy of her CV.  Abigail was invited to an interview the following week and was offered a job.

Abigail says she is “really enjoying the job, there’s a lot to do and get right. I’ve learned a lot already; like organising and delivering the post, copying documents, filing documents and how to use the company’s IT systems.”

Jessica George said: “I’ve had really positive feedback from Abigail’s line manager about her performance. She’s currently working as a File Administrator and there are possibilities for progression in the future to Telephonist/ Administration Assistant within the team; there is also the option of enrolling on a Business Administration level two or three course over the next few months.”

17 employers attended the Results Week Careers Fair; all were recruiting on the day. These included the NHS, Kier Construction, IRG Auto, Sinclair Law, Hilton Hotel, Aldi Retail and Logistics, House of Fraser and the Royal Air Force.
