Bridgend girl kicks-starts career with the help of Jobs Growth Wales

Josie Aitken, from Bridgend, discovered a passion for physiotherapy after getting her big break with a specialist Neuro Physiotherapy clinic through Jobs Growth Wales.

After university, Josie undertook a variety of part-time roles before applying for the job as a Physiotherapy Assistant through the Welsh Government-funded programme.

Josie was taken on by Neuro Physio Wales, in Kenfig Hill, which provides treatment and rehabilitation for individuals with brain and spinal injuries and other neurological conditions.

Following the six-month job opportunity through Jobs Growth Wales, her role was made permanent. She has now been with the company for over two years, achieving a promotion to Clinic Manager as well as being instrumental in establishing the company’s hydrotherapy service.

"I have not looked back since"

"Jobs Growth Wales has given me the opportunity to find a career that I love"

Josie said: “I studied psychology in university and when I graduated, I was really disheartened that I couldn’t find a permanent job. I ended up taking up part-time work but I just couldn’t seem to find a job I was really passionate about.

“That changed when I saw the opportunity with Jobs Growth Wales. I decided to go for it and have not looked back since. I absolutely love it here and feel privileged to have been given this amazing opportunity to work for such a specialised and supportive company. “I started working alongside trained professionals and their clients helping to facilitate treatment programs. I also work with the therapists in our clients’ own homes. In the short time I’ve been here, I have been promoted to Clinic Manager and I now oversee the day-to-day running of the clinic.

“Jobs Growth Wales has given me the opportunity to find a career that I love - so much so that I am returning to university in September as a mature student to become a qualified Chartered Physiotherapist, while working at the company part-time.”

Jobs Growth Wales; a win-win opportunity

Sara Davis, Clinical Director of Neuro Physio Wales said: “I was in the process of opening a new clinic and at that time did not have the resources to employ a full-time member of staff. I heard about Jobs Growth Wales and knew it would be a perfect way to get the help I needed at what was a crucial time for my business.

“Josie has become an integral part of the team and her support has been invaluable. I had no hesitation in offering her a full-time role following her initial six months. Not only has employing Josie brought huge benefits to the company, but it has also helped her find her true vocation in life, so it’s a win-win situation! I’d highly recommend Jobs Growth Wales to other employers looking to take on motivated young people.”

Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan, said: “Jobs Growth Wales provides the perfect opportunity for work-ready 16-24-year-olds to kick start their careers while benefiting from gaining valuable experience in a paid job. The programme not only gives young people the chance to learn and develop vital employability skills but also gives them that all-important first step on the career ladder. “The Welsh Government is committed to ensuring our skills and employability programmes support young people like Josie in their efforts to find fulfilling work, while also giving companies across Wales the opportunity to survive, thrive and expand.”
