All Higher Education institutions are covered by the Disabilities Discrimination Act, which means they must make suitable arrangements for people with special needs.
Use the checklist below before making your final choices.
Checklist
You may need to find out about:
- Access to all parts of the campus
- Support
- Aids
- Parking
- Transport
- Teaching methods
- Where you could live
- Medical facilities nearby
- Who arranges the support
Making a visit
It is always a good idea to visit all of the places that you are thinking of applying to. This will give you the chance to find out about the support you could get and see if you lie the place. Arrange to speak to the person who would put the support in place.
Completing your UCAS form
On the UCAS form there is a space for you to give details of your special needs and requirements. It's important to give as much as you can to be fair to yourself and to the institution. Admissions tutors need to understand how they can provide you with the support you need.
SKILL – The National Bureau for Students with Disabilities – produces lots of very useful leaflets on applying to Higher Education. This includes leaflets on the allowances you may be able to claim to cover any extra costs that you may incur as a student.
