How to apply
Most applications for full time degree, Foundation Degree and HND courses are made through UCAS – the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. (Applications for part time courses are mostly made direct to the institution).
Music students can apply through CUKAS, the website for the Music Conservatoires UK Admissions Service.
All applications for entry to courses offered at universities and colleges in the UK are now made online using Apply. This can be accessed from the UCAS website and provides a secure, web-based, online application system that you do not have to install. This means you can complete your form on a computer and it will be sent to UCAS via the web.
Apply has full guidelines and online help text. There is also a guide called Applying Online which has the background details for all sections of Apply. If you are at school or college they will give you these.
If you apply for any Biomedical course, such as medicine, and some Veterinary courses you will have to take the BMAT test (BioMedical Admissions Test) at your school or college in the first week in November 2008. (Your school will have to register you for the BMAT with OCR by 15th October 2008). You can download past question papers from the University of Cambridge on www.bmat.org.uk.
For entry to Law courses you now have to take the LNAT test (Law National Admissions Test). You choose a date to take the LNAT at a test centre near your home, school or college. Testing for 2008-9 begins in early September 2008. Watch out for university-specific deadlines! For more information and practice LNAT tests go to: www.lnat.ac.uk
If you are no longer at school or college you can request a form at your local Careers Centre or Careers Shop, or complete your application on the web if your Careers Centre or Careers Shop has registered with UCAS to use the online system.
The process can seem very long and drawn out. You need to be aware what happens to your application form as you are likely to be asked to take action at certain points of the process.
