Keen to get out into the world of work?
You may be tempted to take a job where no training is provided – particularly if the wage is quite good.
In the long term this may not be the best option as training and qualifications are important for your future success.
Make sure that any job you apply for offers you training and good prospects.
Some employers, mainly large firms, have their own training schemes. These can offer good training and good career prospects.
Young people aged 16 or 17 who have a job but few qualifications now have the right to paid time off work to study or train. Ask your Careers Adviser about time off for study or training or visit the Department for Education and Skills website.
Almost all workers in the UK aged 16 or over are legally entitled to be paid a minimum amount per hour. This is regardless of the kind of work they do or the size and type of company. To find out about the national minimum wage, visit the Directgov website.
