  Why work towards the award

The CWQA has been developed at a time when our expectations of quality for careers education and guidance and work related education are changing.

A number of policy initiatives are influencing the nature and scope of this work. ACCAC's work on learning outcomes, WRE as part of the Basic Curriculum, the requirement for all students 16-19 to have a programme of careers education and guidance, changes emerging from the 'Learning Country: Learning Pathways' developments and the extensive use of Progress File are all significant influences on curriculum planning and delivery. In the 14 - 19 area the Welsh Baccalaureate includes core modules relating to the world of work and the development of skills for enterprise. The CWQA will provide the framework that helps establishments bring these different yet related themes together. The CWQA will be the centre point of Careers Wales' drive for higher standards in careers education and guidance and work related education. Relevant and up to date training, consultancy and materials will be provided to support all establishments.

Working towards and achieving the CWQA can bring a number of benefits including:
  • Raising the status of both careers education and guidance and work related education internally and externally
  • Ensuring that both subjects meets current national standards, especially ACCAC's frameworks and Estyn's inspection requirements
  • Generating better understanding of the work related and careers education and guidance programme, by staff, students and parents/guardians
  • Enhancing the reputation of establishments within the local community
  • More efficient use of time and resources to meet specific learning outcomes
  • Better co-ordination of Careers Wales and school/college work
  • Encouraging a quality approach to the management of careers education and guidance and work related education especially planning, documenting, evaluating and reviewing processes
  • Increased sharing of best practice locally and across Wales
  • Providing a source of support for work related and careers co-ordinators
