   Good practice guide
  • For detailed help in interpreting the term 'part time' talk to your consultant
  • Planning the provision for part time students will be easier once the full time provision has been fully developed against the learning outcomes and evaluation has taken place. It is advised to leave this criterion until later in the process
  • However during the initial self assessment and action planning process:
    • List the major challenges
    • List the activities that part time students currently have access to
    • Write and issue an entitlement statement for part time students to clarify the above
    • Develop effective systems for communicating entitlement information to part time students in an attempt to ensure a high level of take up
    • Brainstorm possible ways of providing part time students with opportunities to acquire the learning outcomes (e.g. series of workshops held at user friendly times and locations; open study materials; whole/half day events; optional mentoring sessions; better access to ITC)
  • To meet this criteria colleges senior management need to produce a plan, with support and feedback from the consultants and involving all relevant staff
  • The plan can be in any format and will outline the:
    • Planned provision for each appropriate type of part time student;
    • Learning outcomes that will be covered by the activities
    • When the activities will be available to students
    • Who will be involved
    • Practical steps and resources
    • How the activities will be advertised and involvement encouraged
    • How the effectiveness of the activities will be evaluated and participation monitored
  • Accessible IT based provision can be used to support part time student learning through the use of information, self assessment and career planning programmes e.g. Pathfinder, Careers Wales Online
  • Remember that in the first assessment colleges are assessed on the plan. In subsequent assessments the assessors will focus on the actual opportunities for part time students to gain the learning outcomes
