   Good practice guide

Student entitlement statements should be straightforward as they simply itemise the services, activities and information to which students have a right. However the main challenge lies in writing this in layperson's language and keeping it short and snappy.

  • Use bullet points to list the main items
  • SMT need to discuss and agree the statement and be involved in its regular review
  • Show the draft statement to staff and students to 'test' how clear it is
  • Using the same basic formula produce differentiated statement for different courses/students/key stages
  • Entitlement statements should be issued and explained at the beginning of a course/year/stage
  • Display large copies around the site
  • Include in student prospectuses - part and full time as appropriate
  • Include and explain in student handbooks/student planners
  • Schools should ensure parents/guardians have a copy
