Work-related activities and careers education topics provide a fantastic medium for learning in a wide variety of subjects and courses. Obvious examples include Business Studies where students need to look at local businesses and Geography students investigating the local economy. This must help teachers/lecturers to deliver the actual subject/course syllabus rather than be seen as an 'add-on'.
Some ways of encouraging use of work related activities across the curriculum include:
- Meeting with departments or faculties to look at their syllabi and areas where work related activities could be useful
- Following up on the findings from the audit
- Arrange teacher placements for interested staff
- Encourage departments to work with the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) co-ordinators in Careers Wales. This programme brings business into subjects and courses through practical projects, visits and links
- Provide curriculum materials for WRE/CEG that link to subjects/courses
- Ensure staff awareness of CEG/WRE events so they can maximise opportunities to get involved
- Subject/course based assignments should be carried out during work experience
- Utilise staff expertise in planning CEG/WRE activities e.g. involve a Drama specialist in organising mock interview sessions
- In Colleges, organise faculty based workshops with employers linked to specific courses e.g. beauty and hairdressing sessions
