Many staff become involved in WRE, CEG, PSE and Progress File with little experience or training. It is vital that all staff have an up-to-date understanding of these subjects and how they impact on their roles as both subject and form teachers. These fields are ever changing and a conscious effort needs to be made in order to keep staff up-to-date.
Staff development can mean many things and would include: • Attending training sessions, conferences and workshops. • Being mentored or coached in a new role. • Following accredited courses such as offered by HE institutions. • Going on teacher placements to industry. • Work shadowing another profession.
Staff development is needed at different levels for different staff: • Subject co-ordinators need in depth, specialist knowledge and skills to include curriculum planning and evaluation. • Senior management need management skills and an overview of the subjects in a modern context. • Teaching staff in a non specialist role need support in understanding the content of the subjects, the learning outcomes and appropriate teaching and learning techniques.
