The intended learning outcomes for any subject form the starting point for planning and organising the programme. ACCAC have given us detailed learning outcomes through the frameworks for PSE, WRE and CEG.
Step One - Audit current provision against the learning outcomes for each key stage or course and add any others that you think are important for your students.
Step Two - Develop the programme: • Making changes to current tasks so they better meet the intended learning. • Design new activities to ‘plug’ the gaps. • Get rid of any activities (lessons, visits, library, work experience, industry days, mentoring sessions, projects, mock interview sessions) that no longer work well.
Step Three - Evaluate and review: For each activity within the programme evaluate and review its impact and success in terms of how well students achieved the intended learning outcomes. Then use this information to plan the programme again.
The key questions are: • What do we want students to learn? (learning outcomes) • What are we already providing that gives students opportunities to develop the learning outcomes? (audit) • Which teaching and learning activities will best meet these? (pedagogy) • What resources will best meet these? (resource planning) • How can I check that learning is taking place? (assessment) • How can I judge the general effectiveness of the programmed activities? (evaluation)
