The credibility of the CWQA is central to its success and therefore
it is crucial that extremely high standards are demanded of establishments
and that the award is rigorously assessed.
Through the significant amount of planned developmental work that
is essential for the CWQA, establishments will gain a much enhanced
careers education and guidance and work related education programme.
In addition to this, internal auditing and providing evidence against
the criteria are challenging processes. Before committing to the CWQA,
establishments will need to consider the following issues:
- Visible senior management involvement is vital
- Working towards the CWQA is a whole establishment process and
not just the responsibility of the work related and/or careers
co-ordinators
- Sufficient time, personnel and resources need to be dedicated
to achieving the award
- In schools with a sixth form the CWQA criteria apply just as
much to Post 16 provision as to Key Stages 3 and 4. Pre and post
16 work needs to be co-ordinated to show effective progression
- In colleges individual 'units' such as a campus, site or faculty
may work towards and gain the CWQA but is it expected that the
college will plan to eventually include the whole establishment
- In colleges the CWQA applies to the programme for all 14-19
year old students who are full time. It does not cover the provision
for students following HE courses. Colleges are asked to produce
a plan showing how the programme for part time students will eventually
meet the same high standards
Which type of establishments can work towards the award?
The CWQA is available to recognise high quality, effective careers
education and guidance and work related education within any establishment
where 14 -19 year old students are being educated. It is equally relevant
for secondary schools, further education colleges, special schools
and off-site units.
Once awarded the certificate and logo are valid for 3 years.
