Evidence

  • WRE/CEG co-coordinator/s' timetable compared to other middle managers
  • The timetable of any other staff with responsibility for aspects of WRE/CEG
  • Discussion with relevant staff
  • Overall mapping document to show the WR/CEG programme, with timings, for each key stage/course
  • WRE/CEG policy
  • Minutes of meetings

CEG notes
It can be a major challenge for colleges and schools to guarantee sufficient time for careers co-ordinators and others with CEG responsibilities to effectively manage all that is now involved in a high quality CEG programme. However establishments are urged to discuss this openly and to look for practical ways of providing time. For example some establishments now provide the co-ordinator with additional administration support or a part time careers assistant rather than give extra free periods.

Each key stage will require teaching time and time for off timetable events to enable students to reach ACCAC's learning outcomes for CEG.

For the management
A significant amount of non-contact time for the manager and other teachers involved in planning and managing activities is essential. The co-ordination of CEG and WRE is an extremely time intensive process and one which necessitates considerable non-contact time.

  • The 1998 NACGT survey found that 2 hours was the average non-contact time for careers co-ordinators in Wales and England. This falls extremely short of what is needed.
  • The 1997 OFSTED survey of careers education and guidance in secondary schools in England criticises the amount of clerical and basic administration work which careers co-ordinators are involved in. This needs to be considered as part of the whole policy for colleges and schools in Wales if quality is to be promoted.
  • A useful exercise is to ask the co-ordinators to record all the time they spend on management tasks over a 2 week period and compare this with the amount of non contact time. This can be used with senior managers as evidence.
  • Remind establishments that working for the CWQA will necessitate more time for this role
    • An assistant to support the co-ordinator
    • Part time administration support
    • Guarantee of non contact time
    • Taking other non CEG/WRE responsibilities from the co-ordinator who stays on the same level with the same non-contact time
    • Working off-site to achieve major tasks e.g. plan an Industry Day

Curriculum time (students time learning about careers and work)
  • There are no set guidelines or minimum standard that states the amount of curriculum time that must be given to CEG and WRE. However there must be enough time to cover all the learning outcomes.
  • The audit process will show areas of gaps and overlaps and may help in the case for more time if needed.
  • Remember that curriculum time includes all the WRE and CEG activities and not just lessons. For example 2 weeks work experience provides more learning time that for some 'proper' subjects!
  • It is expected that students have careers lessons, these do not necessarily need to be called 'careers', in each year from 9 - 13, in addition to other activities.
