CEG notes
The term 'learning environments' is used to mean the physical location in which learning takes place. Establishments are encouraged look for ways to use different environments e.g. classroom, resource centre, visits to relevant work places or colleges/universities, careers conventions and independent research in the community.

Resources include people and physical materials such as ITC equipment. In planning which locations and resources to use establishments must consider the best fit with the intended learning outcomes.

   Good practice guide

This criterion links to criterion 1.12 (teaching and learning styles) in that it looks at how students access their learning. It asks establishments to consider the range of 'places' that students use to learn about careers and the world of work as well as the resources that can be utilised.

It does not expect establishments to take students out of the classroom week in week out! However it makes perfect sense that since the world of work, training and further education lies outside the college or school, that is the best place to gain real learning. As with everything the use of 'other places' for learning has to be justified in being advantageous over the classroom and not just for the sake of a nice change'!

Establishments are asking to provide environments and resources that from time to time use some of the following:

Resources

  • using computers
  • the students giving power point presentations
  • interviewing or listening to people from outside or mentoring
  • opportunity to use business standard equipment
  • involvement in employer sponsored competition or project
  • games and simulations such as 'Real Game'
Environments
  • visits to places of work
  • visits to HE and/or FE institutions
  • street surveys
  • research in a Careers Wales resource library
  • work experience
  • involvement in a careers convention or HE fair
  • involvement in a workshop based careers day
  • Saturday Engineering Club
  • involvement in Young Enterprise Activity
  • active lessons in the careers resources area
  • placements in /visits to student run shop, training restaurant, salon
