On most application forms you will be asked to give names of people who could give you a reference (these are called referees)

A reference is a letter that is used to tell an employer what you are like.


Teachers
You should always ask someone if they will be a referee before you put their name on your application form.


Social Worker
You can’t ask people in your family or your friends.

You can ask your teacher, tutor or social worker.


Employer
You could also ask:

  • Your last employer (if you have had a paid job or worked as a volunteer)
  • Someone who knows you well e.g. youth club leader or sports coach
