About Us

Our Sixth Form provides a stimulating environment for purposeful academic and vocational study. We have high expectations for self-discipline, motivation and organisation, and support these with an excellent framework for monitoring student progress. Our students benefit from a full programme of advice and guidance for university applications and for their future career.  We pride ourselves on the pastoral care that we offer and we work pro-actively to ensure that all of our students achieve their full potential.  The result is that students achieve well at St. Joseph's with good numbers every year achieving excellence and most going on to take up their first choice places at university.

At St. Joseph's, we see our sixth formers as leaders of the school who work alongside the staff to ensure the smooth running of a friendly, informal but disciplined community.  Most students have an area of responsibility as prefects, and will have a pastoral role as peer mentors, eco-champions or ethos ambassadors.  We provde these opportunities so that all of our students can develop as well-rounded and conscientious leaders.  In return, we expect high standards in relation to behaviour, dress and attitude to work.  Our ethos demands a genuine effort from all so that all can maximise their potential.

At St. Joseph's our students have many opportunities to develop their talents in a range of cultural, sporting and musical opportunities. We emphasise enjoyment and excellence and encourage everyone to have a go!

To study Level 3 qualifications, you will need to achieve 5 A* to C at GCSE or Level 2.  However, not every student achieves this, so we also have timetabled lessons for resit Maths and English and a range of Level 2 qualifications on offer in our Sixth Form.  If you are unsure of the right pathway for you, please contact the school for an appointment to discuss your needs. Send us a message via this link and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

All courses listed are subject to availability and a final course list with option blocks will be published following consultation with current Year 11 students at St. Joseph's and those from other secondary schools in the area who may wish to apply. The subject options you select on the online form will assist us in preparing this final list which will be available in February.

We offer a wide range of sporting and academic facilities shared with the lower school, together with a number of dedicated Sixth Form areas.

There are two Sixth Form common rooms and a relaxed STEM study room with computers. There is a dedicated Sixth Form study area with computers and access to the library.

Sporting facilities include football and rugby pitches, and indoor courts for netball, badminton and table tennis. The Sixth Form run a range of teams dependent on student interest and abilities and compete in both rugby and football in the cups.

There are opportunities for all students to get involved in the full life of the school by helping younger pupils with their reading through the paired reading scheme and teacher aid, useful additions to any CV should you wish to enter teaching or caring professions.

Throughout the year, the Sixth Form run events to raise money for local charities and worthy causes. At Christmas, we invite around 150 pensioners to enjoy food, drink and entertainment - all organised by the sixth formers themselves. The Sixth Form also organises parties to integrate new students and help them to get to know people in less formal surroundings!

Each student is given a form tutor whose role it is to mentor them to the next stage - whether it be to university through our very successful UCAS programme, finding apprenticeships or looking at the world of work. They are there to work alongside the students, supporting them as young adults and helping them to make the right decisions. We get to know our students well and this means that references and personal statements are individual, highlighting the strengths of the student and their achievements.

Academically, teachers often go above and beyond the lessons allocated and as teachers are on site throughout the day and after school, extra lessons or support are readily available. Reports are issued regularly throughout the year based on achievement and effort with the aim of keeping students and parents/carers fully informed of their performance against targets.

We are members of the Seren Network which provides additional support for more able and talented students and work with Neath Port Talbot College and Ystalyfera to offer a range of super curriculum workshops throughout the year. These are hosted by each institute in turn and students also have the opportunity to attend 2 conferences during the year.
